From the age of about 6 months to 12 years, we have a set of
baby or deciduous teeth. Whilst they are only temporary, it is still important
to to maintain them as clean and well aligned as possible.
Children can be brought in to see the dentist as early as 3
years old. At these early appointments, the goal isn't to "fix" or do
anything major but to introduce the child to the first steps in dental care. Counting
of teeth and perhaps a
simple polishing could also be done.
While at home, tooth brushing is vitally important and close
supervision is required to ensure all the surfaces are cleaned. Only a small
amount of toothpaste is required and a soft brush should always be used. If
these are not feasible, a cotton bud or soft cloth to wipe away any food debris
will suffice during the early days.
As the child grows, regular visits will keep dental problems to
a minimum and allow early diagnosis of any anomalies or developmental problems
such as potential crowding
of teeth. Preventive sealing of molar teeth will also keep decays to a
minimum.
